Trucking for Kids
Northeast Technical Institute assisted the Maine Professional Drivers Association and the South Portland Police Department with their annual Trucking for Kids convoy and events. Even though the day was overcast and damp the event was successful. Over $13,000.00 was raised to benefit Camp Sunshine!

Dave Cabral from NTI drove one of our tractor trailers in the convoy with the banner honoring the late Charlie Mansfield. Charlie was one of our instructors who donated a great deal of time to this event until his death September 30th, 2003. Field events were conducted by professional drivers competing in driving and backing challenges using NTI equipment. Along with a truck show and vendors, the public had a great opportunity to see the world of commercial driving up close!

NTI Partners with Northeast Transcription, Inc. to Offer Externships to Medical Transcription Grads
(by Northeast Transcription, Inc.)

Northeast Transcription Inc, is pleased to announce an exciting partnership with Northeast Technical Institute, headquartered in Scarborough, Maine, for medical transcription education. Select Institute students will be recommended by their instructor for an externship program, which is an enhancement of the foundation Northeast Technical training.

The externship's purpose is to increase students' terminology, research, and technical skills in an environment that more closely resembles an MT's working environment. Because students in the program will learn our medical transcription platform and QA standards, it is expected that their on-the-job training will be shortened and primarily will focus on client specifics.

New MT school graduates can take many months to achieve acceptable productivity. The externship will give students the tools to begin their transcription career at an advanced level and reach a comfortable income level sooner.

Students who meet the productivity and accuracy requirements of the program will be eligible to apply for the 3-month paid internship offered by Northeast Transcription. They may also apply for a standard ("experienced") position if they choose. Hiring decisions will be based on our recruiting needs at the time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long does the Step Up program take?
    The program is 160 hours.
  2. Is this a paid program?
No. The transcription you will be doing is still educational content that does not generate any revenue. If you are accepted into the NTI internship program, you will be paid an internship rate.
  3. How do I enroll?
Only Northeast Technical Institute students are eligible for the externship. You must be recommended by your instructor. Please visit www.northeasttech.com for complete enrollment information.
  4. Are students who complete the externship required to accept employment with Northeast Transcription?
No. However, our expectation is that students who apply for the program do so with the intent of becoming an NTI employee.
  5. Is it possible to be hired by Northeast Transcription without going through the externship?
Certainly. A graduate of any MT school may take either the "experienced MT" test, which leads to regular employment, or the "new graduate" test, which leads to the internship.
  6. What is the advantage of completing the externship?
If you are hired by NTI, you will already be familiar with the transcription platform and QA standards, shortening your training time and allowing a quicker transition to full productivity. If you are not hired, you will still have had experience with a state-of-the-art platform and with working under productivity and accuracy requirements. This should be an advantage when applying to other companies.
  7. Can I apply for the internship without going through the externship program?
Yes, as long as you meet the guidelines. Externship graduates, however, will receive preferment.

NTI Helps Students Put Their Education To Work
Employment Times
Scarborough, Maine-based Northeast Technical Institute, Inc., a leader in specialized workforce training for more than 20 years, continues its unparalleled success in helping students achieve their career goals.

"I earn $1000 every week, more than I ever did working for paper mills for over 30 years", says Gene Stanley, a 2002 Truck Driver graduate of NTI. Gene now drives for Timberland Trucking Company in Medway, ME. His first job after graduating from NTI was with RC Moore, but Gene wanted to be home more often, and decided to switch to Timberland - Gene is now home most weeknights and has weekends off.

Karen Brown of Seabrook, NH was tired of being laid off after 25 years in the electronics industry. "I just wanted a career like professional driving because there's always jobs", says Karen. "And I felt that NTI could give me the training I needed to get hired with a good company. I was right, because their entire staff really took an interest in me. I never felt like just a number, and the instructors were so professional and caring. And when it came down to applying for jobs, I had 7 job offers within 24 hours! I chose Werner Enterprises and I'm doing very well."

NTI offers more than professional truck driver training. Since the early 1990's, NTI has been offering hands-on health care and computer training. NTI's computer programs are geared towards industry certifications like Microsoft and CompTIA, which help its graduates to compete for entry-level computer jobs. "I knew nothing about computers when I enrolled at NTI", says Fred McDonald, now employed with Gorham Micro, Inc. as a PC Support Administrator. "But now I have a great job with a terrific company and it all started at NTI."

NTI's health care training includes courses in Medical Office Administration with a concentration in medical coding and billing, transcription, and medical office procedures. Pharmacy Technician training is now also offered as market demand increases for well trained, certified technicians. Suzanne Keefe, a graduate of NTI's Medical Office Assistant program and employed with the Visiting Nurses Association, says, "I love my new career, and I found my education at NTI to be exactly what I needed to enter the medical field."

Jim Liponis, NTI's President, says, "We take our mission as a leader in the work-related, project-based education seriously. Our short-term training has enabled thousands of our graduates to prosper in their new careers. And since the U.S. Department of Labor tells us that seven out of every 10 jobs now requires some kind of specialized training beyond High School, we feel our training is more important than ever before."

Northeast Technical Institute, Inc. provides short-term, career-focused education in the fields of Health Care, Information Technology, Truck Driving, and Bartending. NTI currently operates three school campuses in Scarborough and Bangor, Maine, and Haverhill, Massachusetts. PAY: The American Trucking Association reports that the average truck driver makes about $41,000 per year. According to industry data, starting drivers generally earn about $32,000 -$34,000 per year. It is not unusual for experienced drivers to earn $60,000 or more, and Owner Operators to earn $80,000 to $100,000 per year.

BENEFITS: Virtually all of Northeast Tech's client companies offer the following benefits:

  • Tuition Reimbursement (up to $5000)
